The Dream Continues

My first appearance of the new year was spent honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Sunday January 17th I was honored to speak at the Pitt County NAACP MLK Celebration held at Mt. Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Winterville, NC. Monday morning I attended another celebration honoring Dr. King. This celebration was held in Ayden at a local restaurant. I had a wonderful time at both events. I am truly blessed to be able to reap the benefits of great leaders such as Martin Luther King, Jr. Speaking at this program as well as attending this program made me wonder what would my life be like if Dr. King did not stand up for what he believed in; I would probably attend an all African-American school and received books that were hand-me-downs. My life would be totally different! I would not have friends or teachers that don't look like myself. Segregation and injustice would still exists today if it was not for the many great leaders we have had in the past. As Dr. King said "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere."

J. H. Rose Homecoming Queen 2009-2010

This year is really going by so fast! I am humbled by the good things that are happening in my life....not only am I Miss Black NC Teen but I won Homecoming Queen at my high school. These opportunities have been great and I enjoy being a role model to others as well as being a positive representative. It is truly an honor to be elected by my peers to represent the whole school. A special thank you to all of my classmates and friends who voted for me! :)

Until next time...

Summer!

Okay, so I know I haven't blogged in a while...I'm going to get better. I hope everyone is enjoying their summer and being safe. It's going by so fast; I have been volunteering in my community as well as preparing for the Miss Black USA Talented Teen pageant which is at the end of the month. I recently completed my peer education program-D.I.V.A. Demanding to Inform Vibrant Adolescents which is apart of my platform during my reign as Miss Black North Carolina USA Talented Teen 2009. Boy, did I learn a lot as I was going through training. A part of being a peer educator opens doors for me to talk to other teenagers about STDs, HIV, AIDs, peer pressure, and self-esteem. Not only did I just get to talk about these important things I also got to be about it. I assisted with some rapid HIV testing. Although many people are afraid to know whether they have a STD or HIV/AIDs, it is very important that people get tested so the appropriate actions can be taken from there.
